Turnpike Road from Brighton to Newhaven
A dataset of property owners and occupiers (primarily land) affected by a proposal to build a new turnpike road from the east Brighton to Newhaven (1823) is now available to search on Sussex Discovery.
Proposed new road in Brighton
In 1845, a new road linking Queen’s road to North Street was proposed though never built. It would have cut across many existing streets and properties. Details of the 200+ property owners and occupiers affected by this proposal are now available to researchers on Sussex Discovery.
Waterworks
Proposals and plans for large schemes that affected local property, such as plans for railways and roads, had to be submitted for approval to the relevant Quarter Sessions, often accompanied by “books of reference” listing the property owners and occupiers who would be affected. The QDP series includes plans for new waterworks and water supply. Recently added to Sussex Discovery are datasets from such schemes for Brighton (1830, 1853, 1855, 1862) and Hastings (1830).
