Hanover Chapel, Queens Road, Brighton

In 1981, forgotten chambers underneath the Brighthelm Centre were rediscovered and found to contain over 500 coffins.  Part of the Centre building was formerly the presbyterian Hanover Chapel, and it was in the crypt that the bodies had been interred.  Dating mostly from the 1820s – 1860s, many of the coffins had stone memorial plaques attached to them.  Some of the plaques had disintegrated making them impossible to read or only partially so.  The remains were reinterred at Woodvale Cemetery.
